Hammond Heart Safeguarding Curriculum
At Crofton Hammond Infants, teaching children about safeguarding is a high priority. We call this work our Hammond Heart learning, and the Hammond Heart character joins us to help children understand how to keep themselves safe in a warm, age‑appropriate and memorable way. Safeguarding is woven throughout our curriculum and daily routines, helping children develop the confidence to recognise unsafe situations and to speak out if they ever feel worried or unsure.
Our safeguarding curriculum includes learning about how to speak out if we feel unsafe, understanding the trusted adults who can help us, and recognising people in the community who keep us safe. Children learn about medicines and substances, safe and unsafe relationships, managing risk, and the importance of keeping certain parts of their bodies private. These messages are reinforced through our Personal Development Learning (PDL) curriculum, supported by the SCARF framework, which provides clear, age‑appropriate lessons on safety, consent, boundaries, feelings and healthy relationships.
Each year, we hold a special week of learning focused on the many ways we can keep ourselves safe: our Hammond Heart Safety Week. During this week, children take part in workshops, stories, discussions and visits from community organisations such as the Police, RNLI and other safeguarding partners. This dedicated time helps children deepen their understanding of personal safety, online safety, road safety, water safety and emotional safety.
Our safeguarding work is also closely linked to our behaviour expectations- Be Safe, Be Ready and Be Kind, which guide children’s choices and actions every day. Together, our Hammond Heart learning, SCARF curriculum and whole‑school values ensure that every child develops the knowledge, confidence and language they need to keep themselves safe now and as they grow.
